There will be a Press Conference and Rally December 13 from 8 am – 9 am and the California Coastal Commission Meeting at 9 am in the Newport Beach City Council Chambers, Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Dr. [Google Map directions here: https://goo.gl/maps/wSKKs6gdc3Q2]

On December 13th, the California Coastal Commission will hear and could approve the Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration and Oil Consolidation Project (Agenda Item 14a). This massive expansion of oil operations over, around, and under the Los Cerritos Wetlands and the Newport Inglewood Fault will destroy natural and tribal cultural resources and place the health and welfare of the community at risk from increased air and water pollution, oil spills, and seismic activity.

The impact of extracting and refining the projected 200 million barrels of oil has not been addressed in relation to global warming, sea level rise, or increased pollution from local refineries.

The Los Cerritos Wetlands are a place of prayer and ceremony for the Tongva and Acjachemen who take responsibility for protecting ancestors, tribal history and those plant and animal relatives that make their homes here.

We stand with tribal peoples, environmentalists, and the community to stop the Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration and Oil Consolidation Project.

Organizations opposing approval of the project include:

The Gabriellino/Tongva Band of Mission Indians

The Sierra Club

The Center for Biological Diversity

Citizens About Responsible Planning/CARP

Protect the Long Beach/Los Cerritos Wetlands CoalitionĀ  (member organizations: United Coalition to Protect Panhe, California Cultural Resources Preservation Alliance, Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples, Red Earth Defense, Long Beach Area Peace Network, Stop Fracking Long Beach, The Environmental 99%, Long Beach Progressive Alliance, Long Beach Greens, Oil Money Out, Divest Long Beach)
